Lead by example
Model good reading behaviour: if your child sees you read, they'll want to do it as well. Let them see you enjoying a good book or magazine. Show them that reading is a pleasurable activity, and they'll be more likely to pick up a book themselves.
Making reading fun
Start reading together at a young age. Make going to the library and picking out new books an adventure by getting a library card. Make reading part of your routine. Keep lots of books around. If you go somewhere, take something to read. Take turns reading aloud. Try all different types of books: fiction, comic, cookbooks, magazines, fact - any reading is good reading.
Create a reading environment
Create a reading nook, it doesn't have to be big but somewhere special to read. Read what they read: read the same books and discuss them. Give books as gifts. Re-read favourite books. Read with friends: encourage your child to join/ start a book club with friends.
